Physalis or Golden Berries
Physalis (also known as golden berrie) is native to the Andes and has been known since the times of the Inca Empire. Because its pulp is soft, rich, and sweet, and because it is round, Physalis has become a premier Colombian berry.
Colombia’s Andes are unmatched for physalis harvesting because of their rich soils above 2,000 masl and their annual rainfall of over 1,000 mm. As a result, Colombia produces more than 90% of the world’s exports of this fruit. Thanks to increased demand and improvements in post-harvesting, its market is booming. Physalis exports grew by 9.4% in 2024.
Frutas Comerciales is a leading producer of Physalis, exporting around 30 tons of the crop per week. This produce is transported by plane so it can reach its markets as soon as possible. Physalis is mostly exported to the United States and the European Union.
